I knew I had to work out today.
Our school celebrated Thanksgiving today, treating the entire high school division (students, support staff, and faculty) to a real American Thanksgiving meal. It was another gorgeous day here in Dubai, so our feast was held outside on the grassy field. As we ate our lunch, my eyes kept wandering over to the track. “I will be seeing you later today, my friend,” my mind told the track. My leg muscles, however, said “No, not today. Today’s a bad day. I’ve got other things to do…like resting.” I’m so thankful I listened to my mind and not my muscles…
At 6pm I walked over to the school track, all decked out in my running gear. The girls’ soccer team had just finished their practice; the track was quiet save for a few varsity girls waiting for their ride home. The evening was unbelievably cool…a comfortable cool. I was appropriately dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. In conditions like this I always start off thinking I can run forever. My goal, however, was not forever; it was eight laps. Well, my friends, eight laps in, I knew I could do at least two more. Thus, I completed ten laps at a pace of 7:21…much faster than my previous pace of 7:50! Sometimes, it’s the little things (like 29 seconds) that can make me thankful for pushing myself a bit harder.
What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend?
